Subject Pronouns

Let's look more closely at the subject pronouns "nosotros" and "nosotras." This is another example of gender finding its way into Spanish grammar. Remember, both of these words mean "we." Here are the rules for using them correctly.

  • If you are referring to a group that is 100% females, use "nosotras."
  • If you are referring to a group that includes even one male, use "nosotros."

Imagine that you are a female nurse, sitting with a group of your female co-workers. You are eating lunch in the cafeteria. The person you are talking to on your cell phone asks where you are:

Nosotras estamos en la cafetería.
We're in the cafeteria.

On the other hand, if even one of your group is a male, it would be correct to say:

Nosotros estamos en la cafetería.
We're in the cafeteria.
