Subject Pronouns

Now let's look at "ellos" and "ellas." Remember, both of these words mean "they." The same principle holds.

  • If you are referring to a group that is 100% females, use "ellas."
  • If you are referring to a group that includes even one male, use "ellos."
Ellas están en la cafetería.
They (all females) are in the cafeteria.
Ellos están en la cafetería.
They (at least one male) are in the cafeteria.
