Gender of Nouns – Final Words
Let's review:
- All nouns are either masculine or feminine
- In most cases, gender is arbitrary
- For living creatures, gender often matches sex
- Always learn the noun + the definite article
- Nouns that end in -o are usually masculine
- Nouns that end in -a are usually feminine
- Two exceptions are "la mano" and "el día"
Those are the basics, but there are a few more rules you can learn. To learn more about Spanish gender of nouns, refer to the "Extra Help" links in the right sidebar of this page.
